1) Why UID Journal?
a) Many suppliers are logistically challenged to cover the compliance requirements stipulated within the DoD contract .
b) UID Journal is a utility tool to highlight issues to help educate and inform the over 60,000 Prime and Sub-contact, suppliers, 3rd Party Logistics firms (3-PL’s) and agencies that supply the US government
c) UID Journal assigns equal weight to activities of suppliers and Program managers.

UID JOURNAL is focused on the use of technology mandated by DoD guidelines, and as a resource for contractors, suppliers and agencies specifically the submission of ASN and UID Registry information to meet the requirement

The target readers are Department of Defense (DoD) suppliers who will be affected by the conversion of manual, paper submission methods to digital submission and the required technologies. Specifically, these are the Contract suppliers, prime and sub, distributors, facilities, and agencies of the GSA DoD (DISA, DFARs, . .) - the stakeholders in the DoD community.

UID is a ‘common key’ across the department (DoD). It means Unique identification programs. UID refers collectively to all such programs. A DoD Contract number is, in fact, a UID that is enhanced by additional keys. refers to a System of Information.

• 07/29/2003 - Policy for Unique Identification of Tangible Items (UID):
Policy memorandum released on July 29th 2003 established UID as a mandatory DoD requirement on all solicitations issued on or after January 1, 2004.
Policy Updates issued November 26, 2003, December 22, 2003, September 3, 2004 and December 23, 2004.
UID is required for all property items delivered to the Government if:
- Acquisition cost is more than $5,000
- Items with an acquisition cost below $5,000, when identified by the requiring activity as DoD serially managed, mission essential, or controlled inventory Items with an acquisition cost below $5,000 as determined by the requiring activity Regardless of value, any DoD serially managed subassembly, component or part embedded within an item and the “parent” item in which it is embedded.
